Summary
Roberto Schroeder established his family label in 2001 and built the winery facility three years later. Familia Schroeder has since become one of the most influential estates in Patagonia. While developing the property, the fossil skeleton of a 40-foot-long dinosaur was discovered, and it remains on display for visitors today. The winery faces southwest, with an aerodynamic roof built to mimic an airplane wing and protect from harsh winds. Built into a slope, the winery’s five stories facilitate gravity flow production. Beyond its top line, Schroeder has several additional labels in its portfolio, including Saurus (inspired by the dinosaur discovery), Alpataco, and Puestero. The current winemaker is Leonardo Puppato. The winery also has a collaborative project, Alto Limay, with Paul Hobbs, who has consulted for Schroeder.
Style & Vinification Techniques
At Schroeder, production happens by gravity flow. The winery’s top story receives the grapes, followed by pneumatic pressing the story below, then stainless steel fermentation tanks, then storage tanks, and finally the barrel cellar on the bottom floor. The top wines are hand-harvested and vinified in stainless steel following a cold maceration, then aged entirely in French oak barrels.
