Summary

Since arriving to Argentina in 1988, American winemaker Paul Hobbs, who owns an eponymous winery in Sonoma and consults globally at several projects, has become one of the country’s most influential figures. In 1997, Hobbs partnered with winemakers and couple Luis Barraud and Andrea Marchiori to found Viña Cobos, harvesting their first vintage two years later. Much of their fruit is sourced from the Marchiori Estate, owned by Andrea’s father, including the inaugural 1999 release. Working with vineyards in both Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, Viña Cobos has several tiers of production. The top level, and most expensive, is Cobos, which comprises two Malbec wines, from the Marchiori and Chañares properties, and a Cabernet Sauvignon labeled Volturno. The Bramare label features a series of single-vineyard wines, including five Malbec bottlings, two Chardonnay wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cabernet Franc, as well as a set of varietally labeled appellation wines. Felino is the brand’s entry-level tier, comprising a Malbec, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Chardonnay.

Style & Vinification Techniques

The winery is designed for gravity flow production. Grapes are vinified by parcel, and the winery employs both French and American oak in its barrel program. The top wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
