Summary

The estate was founded in 1880 by Peter Breuer, a partner in a wine shipping firm called Scholl & Hillebrand. Peter’s son Georg took over and ran the property until he passed away in 1978, at which point his sons Bernhard and Heinrich took over the estate. The estate’s reputation is thanks to Bernhard and his Rieslings form the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg and Rauenthaler Nonnenberg vineyards. Bernhard died suddenly in 2004, leaving the winery in the hands of his daughter Theresa, who at the time had just begun pursuing an enology degree at the university in Geisenheim. Theresa continued her studies while managing the estate with her uncle Heinrich and Swedish cellar master Markus Lunden. Like her father, Theresa refuses to name her sites as Erste Gewächs and Grosse Lage. The estate was a member of the VDP and Charta until 1999, when Georg Breuer chose to leave both organizations.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Theresa Breuer refuses to use herbicides and employs organic manures in place of synthetic fertilizers. The average yield for the property is 45 hl/ha. Riesling isn’t picked until October, and harvest is done entirely by hand. No botrytis is allowed in the dry wines. The wines are fermented with cultured yeasts, and the cru wines ferment and age in stück and doppelstück.
