Summary
While winemaking history here dates to the 1700s, the current Col d’Orcia estate was established in 1973 when Count Alberto Marone Cinzano purchased the property. Marone’s son, Count Francesco Marone Cinzano, took ownership in 1992. Today, Col d’Orcia is one of the largest producers in Montalcino, producing wine from both estate vineyards and surrounding properties farmed under supervision. All vineyards are organically farmed, and the estate participates in significant research with both the University of Florence and University of Milan on Sangiovese clones, planting density and cover crops.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Wines are aged in large Slavonian botti and Allier oak barrels of various sizes.
