Summary

Volpaia was a bustling medieval village on the border of Florence and Siena. The coat of arms that appears on the winery label is that of the della Volpaia family, a powerful local family that took its name from the village and had ties to figures such as Leonardo da Vinci. The modern-day winery was established when Raffaello Stianti acquired it piece by piece, then gave it as a gift to his daughter, Giovannella, and her new husband Carlo Mascheroni in 1972. They converted historic sites in the village into winemaking facilities. Today, Giovannella and Carlo run the winery with their children Nicolò and Federica. The family owns about two-thirds of the village, a popular tourist destination.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Volpaia is certified organic by Biodyvin. All wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and aged in barrel. Only the Chianti Classico and Riserva use mature, large-format barrels. All other wines are aged in French barrique with at least some new oak.
