Summary
Ca’ Marcanda translates to “the house of endless negotiations,” a reference to the 18 trips it took famed Italian winemaker Angelo Gaja to negotiate its purchase, completed in 1996. Another six years passed before the new winemaking facility was finished. The estate features two predominant alluvial soil types. The terre brune, rich in loam and clay, is the source for Magari and Promis. On the higher land, the terre bianche, rich in calcareous clay and limestone, is the source for the estate’s flagship Ca’ Marcanda. Gaja’s Tuscan properties also include the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino, which has released three different Brunello di Montalcino wines since 1994.
Style & Vinification Techniques
All grape varieties are hand-harvested and fermented separately before blending. With the exception of the Vermentino, wines are fermented in varying sizes of wood, from 500-liter tonneaux to large wooden tanks. Red wines remain in contact with their skins for about two weeks. The wines are aged in a mix of new and slightly used wood.
