Summary
The area of Capezzana, now a private estate, was once a small village known for the production of high quality olive oil and wine, with documentation as far back as 1,200 years. In 1475, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi built farm houses and winemaking facilities on the property. The estate changed hands multiple times over the following years, finally landing in possession of the Contini Bonacossi family in 1920. Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi expanded the property; his grandson Ugo was key to establishing the company’s modern reputation. Today, Capezzana is run by Ugo’s children and grandchildren and produces over 70% of the Carmignano DOCG output. The estate is certified organic by Bioagricert and has a library of its wine back to 1925.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Capezzana focuses primarily on Sangiovese with judicious inclusion of international varieties and French oak aging. Red wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks before secondary fermentation and aging in various barrel types, depending on the wine. The top wines will spend over a year each in oak and bottle.
