Summary
Agronomist Giorgio Perrin was the first private owner of the Petrolo estate. When he purchased it in 1834, he discovered artifacts that pointed to farming on the property as far back as 3,000 years earlier. Perrin turned the estate’s broader agricultural focus to viticulture. Petrolo was purchased by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s. Today, it is run by the fourth generation of the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. Twelve vineyard sites compose the estate, sitting at elevations between 250 and 450 meters above sea level. Over the years, the family has significantly increased vine density while lowering yields. More recently, viticulture has shifted away from chemical farming and toward biodiversity.
Style & Vinification Techniques
The estate focuses on sustainability in the vineyard. All grapes are harvested manually and are hand-sorted upon arrival at the winery. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Fermentations are performed with ambient yeast, and the wines remain in contact with their skins for 15 to 20 days before pressing. The wines are transferred to a mix of new and used barriques. For many wines, the estate employs frequent lees stirring for the first six months of aging.
