Summary

Rocca di Frassinello is a venture by Domini Castellare di Castellina. The idea was to bring Castellare di Castellina’s prized Sangioveto (Sangiovese) grape closer to the coast, in an area that would support Bordeaux varieties to blend with it. Soon after the company found an appropriate place to begin, Domaines Barons de Rothschild joined the venture – not only making it much larger, but also making it the first wine collaboration between French and Italian companies. The initial vineyards were planted in 2000. The estate, now 500 hectares total, traverses numerous parts of the Sovata River Valley. Located on the estate are a variety of conservatories and archaeological sites that have uncovered tombs and structures dating back to the sixth century BC Etruscan necropolis San Germano.

Style & Vinification Techniques

All fermentations are performed with ambient yeasts. The Bordeaux varieties are fermented in stainless steel, and the Sangiovese is fermented in large used wood. All of the Sangiovese planted at Rocca di Frassinello was selected from the Castellare di Castellina estate in Chianti.
