Summary

Rita Tua and her husband, Virgilio Bisti, began their estate in 1984 with the purchase of a small plot of land where they planted Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. With only two hectares of vineyards and without the means to bottle their own wines, they became one of the great “garage” wineries of their time. By 1992, they had expanded their property and began estate-bottling. Their  son-in-law, Stefano Frascolla, helped to build global awareness of the brand. In 2000, the estate was vaulted to cult status when Robert Parker awarded the 1997 Redigaffi 100 points. Today, the wines continue commanding steep prices. Located in an area of the Maremma within Suvereto known as the Colline Metallifere, the vineyards are stony, with silt, clay, and sand deposits on a gentle slope. Daughter Simena has been involved in the business since her father’s death in 2010.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Low yields and optimum ripeness are viticultural priorities at Tua Rita. The estate employs biodynamic principles but is not certified. Wines are fermented in large wooden casks, receive frequent punchdowns, and stay in contact with the skins for a minimum of three weeks. The wines are all aged in a mix of new and used barriques for at least 18 months and are bottled without fining or filtration.
