Summary

The house was started by Spaniard Sebastian Gonzalez Martinez to sell wine to British merchants for bottling under their own names. Martinez later partnered with Englishman John Gassiot and became the largest shipper to the UK by the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century, while many Port houses were struggling, Martinez was sold publicly on the British stock exchange, but by the mid-1960s, the company was sold again. The house passed through many hands before finally being acquired by Symington Family Estates in 2006. The Symington group is taking advantage of the opportunity to rebuild Martinez to focus on creating modern and experimental wines.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Both the Vintage and Single Quinta Vintage Port are crushed by foot in lagares and aged for two years in large oak vats at the Symington facilities in Vila Nova de Gaia.
