Summary
Now in their fifth generation of independent, family ownership, Niepoort has made a name for itself with its Tawny Port. More recently, Niepoort has been at the forefront of table wine production in the region. Dirk Niepoort, the current winemaker, has come to be known as one of the region’s “Douro Boys” for advancing his progressive style of Port and table wine production. Dirk firmly believes that the house’s Vintage Port style is more important than the overall house style. The Colheita and Garafeira wines are the house’s predominant Port specialties.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Niepoort is known for both ultra-traditional methods (including maintaining a large stock of Garrafeira) as well alternative and progressive methods, especially in table wine production. The house uses traditional circular granite lagares for crushing grapes by foot and typically ferments with a high percentage of stem inclusion.
