Summary
Cálem is one of the longstanding torchbearers for the Porto region and has been one of its largest exporters since the 1850s. Its growth happened for practical reasons and not by intention. The firm started shipping Portuguese table wine to Brazil in exchange for goods, eventually building a small cooperage company. This led to storing and aging Port. Cálem had its own fleet for exporting, illustrated on Cálem labels. The house was acquired by the Sogevinus Group in 1998.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Plagued by inconsistency in the latter half of the 20th century, Cálem’s wines have come a long way since the purchase by Sogevinus in 1998. Wines are typically close to equal parts Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, and Touriga Franca.
