Summary
“Infantado” comes from the Portuguese term infante, meaning “prince,” and the estate was indeed established by a prince, Dom Pedro IV, in the early 19th century. Quinta do Infantado has only produced estate wines since 1979 and was not permitted to export until 1986 given its location outside of Vila Nova de Gaia. Until that time, grapes were sold to Taylor’s and Sandeman. When Port production laws changed, Quinta do Infantado was one of the first producers to join the export market.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Infantado is famous for producing wines that are drier in style. Longer fermentations are common and less aguardente is used, resulting in dense, opulent, fruit-driven wines with less residual sugar than the norm.
