Summary

Tamdhu was founded in 1896 by a consortium of whisky blenders. The project was designed by architect Charles Doig, and the distillery was created with the most advanced technology, an ideal location, and the best barrel sourcing from Jerez. Tamdhu was purchased in 1898 by Highland Distillers, only to be closed in 1911, reopened after two years, and mothballed in 1928. In 1950, the distillery’s malting floors were replaced with Saladin boxes, which mechanized the barley-turning process. Through increased production, Tamdhu provided barley for other distilleries owned by Edrington, which had acquired Highland Distillers in 1999. The distillery was mothballed again in 2009, then sold to Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011, with production resuming in 2012. More recently, the distillery has reclaimed its former glory. Tamdhu returned to the single malt Scotch market in 2017 with its 120th anniversary, 50-year-old bottling, released for £16,000 a bottle.

Style & Distillation Techniques

Previously known for contributing spirits to popular blended whiskies like The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark, Tamdhu is now receiving more recognition for its single malt releases. These are exclusively matured in Oloroso Sherry casks.
