Summary
Bodegas Hijos de Rainera Pérez Marín is more commonly known and referred to as “La Guita” after the sole wine the house produces. The name is old Spanish slang for string (think guitar) and a piece of raffia is tied around each bottleneck. La Guita is Spain’s top selling Manzanilla and has seen a large increase in production over the past two decades. In the past the wine was made from a single vineyard. But as demand grew, they began sourcing from within the pago Miraflores. For the greater part of the twentieth century, the house was owned by the Hidalgo family. The family sold the winery in the 1970s, and ownership changed several times before Grupo Estevez acquired the house in 2007. Similar to Valdespino, the group’s Technical Director Eduardo Ojeda has played a major role reviving the brand and production quality. Grupo Estevez purchased the Miraflores Grower’s co-op, which gave them exclusive access to several growers within the pago, so that the wine is now a single-vineyard wine once more. The house has two soleras in separate bodegas in Sanlúcar: one larger volume containing around 15,000 casks and the other a historic and smaller solera with around 3,000 casks. Wines from both soleras are blended together before bottling.
Style & Vinification Techniques
The wine used to be made with a higher average age than today, popularity and demand grew and ultimately resulted in the wine being bottled younger, now averaging around 5-6 years as opposed to 12 years average age. Correspondingly the wine is considered to be a fresher and lighter style.
