Summary

Englishman Thomas Osborne Mann started the firm in 1772, and began shipping sherries in 1804. That said, the family did not begin marketing and shipping under the Osborne name officially until 1890. Today the company has grown to become a multi-product empire especially known for their Port and their prominent Jerez brandies. Brandy sales have been very high and their production of numerous other more profitable products has lead to the company’s decline in Osborne’s sales and focus on Sherry. The company sold all of their vineyard stocks in 2010, but still maintains their very old soleras despite not bottling from them. Osborne purchased all four of Pedro Domecq’s VORS soleras after its demise and release limited bottlings. Their rare wines are off-dry, a product of aging Palomino and Pedro Ximénez together (as opposed to blending after aging). The company recently acquired import rights to some of their prized, older wines. Osborne’s wines are still very high quality but it remains to be seen if Osborne will reestablish themselves as fine Sherry producers, or if they will gradually decrease their production, keeping Sherry a secondary focus in favor of more profitable products.

Style & Vinification Techniques

The house style tends to be fuller-bodied and plush. They produce Premium range bottlings but their most notable wines are from their oldest soleras and four VORS soleras (purchased from Bodegas Pedro Domecq). Although the practice has fallen out of favor in modern day, Osborne still adds around 2% Pedro Ximénez wine at the start of blending to balance oak aging and add complexity.
