Summary
Nick Peay discovered a passion for wine at a young age. After working for wineries including Schramsberg, La Jota, Newton, and as Assistant Winemaker at Storrs (Santa Cruz Mountains), he decided create his own label. Nick procured the help of his brother Andy and the two established their eponymous vineyard in the northwest corner of Sonoma County in 1995. Their parcel borders the limit of Californian viticulture just three miles from the Pacific Ocean, lower in elevation and cooler than neighboring Sonoma Coast vineyards, just above the fog layer. Nick’s wife Vanessa Wong, whose winemaking experience comes from storied estates such as Peter Michael, Jean Gros, Chateau Lafite and Hirsch, made their first vintage in 2001. Vanessa continues as Winemaker today, Nick works with their vineyard, and Andy takes responsibility for sales and public relations.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Vineyards are farmed organically. Conscious efforts are made in the vineyard and winery to be as sustainable as possible. All Chardonnay wines undergo full malolactic fermentation and bâtonnage. Approximately 40% new, low toast, French oak is used for aging the wines, and they are bottled without fining of filtration.
