Summary

Merry Edwards began her career in food chemistry and fermentation before she started making home wine. She received a master’s degree in food science from UC Davis, specializing in enology, and went on to make three vintages at Mount Eden Vineyards. There, she developed UCD clone 37 from Pinot Noir cuttings she selected in 1975. The Merry Edwards selection remains successful today in the Russian River Valley. Merry was founding winemaker of Matanzas Creek, her own company Merry Vintners, and, finally, Merry Edwards in 1997. She received the San Francisco Chronicle’sWinemaker of the Year award in 2004 and finished construction of an estate winery on the Coopersmith Vineyard in 2007. Roederer purchased Merry Edwards in February 2019.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Winemaking at Merry Edwards draws its inspiration from the Old World. Pinot Noir is fermented in open-top, temperature-controlled tanks, and punchdowns are pneumatic. The wines spend up to 18 months in a maximum of 20% new French oak before an additional six or more months in bottle before release.
