Summary

The early history of Château Certan de May is the same as that of its more famous neighbor, Vieux Château Certan. The two originated as a single wine-producing property in the 1700s owned by the Demays, a family of Scottish origin that was gifted the land by the French crown two centuries earlier. The estate fractured during the French Revolution, and Certan de May broke from its neighbor in the 19th century. But the property remained in Demay hands until 1925, when it was acquired by the Barreau family. Jean-Luc Barreau manages Certan de May today, while Michel Rolland and Jean-Claude Berrouet consult.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Certan de May is a generous expression of Pomerol, further exaggerated in riper, warmer vintages. The vines sit on a single block and are cultivated by hand. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, while malolactic fermentation proceeds in barrel. The wine sits in French barriques, up to 80% new, for 16 to 20 months before bottling.
