Summary

One of the oldest estates in Pomerol, Château L’Évangile first appeared as Fazilleau in the 1741 land registry. At the time, it was owned by the Léglise family (unrelated to L’Eglise Clinet), and it was given the name L’Évangile by a subsequent proprietor, a lawyer called Isambert. In 1862, L’Évangile was sold to Jean Paul Chaperon, a member of the prominent Ducasse family who maintained ownership until the 1990s. Jean Paul Chaperon built the château on the property and expanded the vineyards; by the turn of the 20th century, L’Évangile was widely regarded as one of Pomerol’s premier estates. In 1990, Simone Ducasse sold a 70% share of L’Évangile to the Rothschild family, and by 1999, it was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Under its new management, a second wine, Blason de L’Évangile, was established, the cellars were renovated, and a new section of vineyard was purchased in 2012 from La Croix de Gay.

Style & Vinification Techniques

L’Évangile separates its vinification by parcel, and only after fermentation, which takes place in temperature-controlled cement vats, is it decided which lots go into the grand vin versus the second wine. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in barrel, a minimum 70% new, and élevage lasts for 18 months.
