Summary
La Conseillante takes its name from 18th-century proprietor Catherine Conseillan, a wealthy businesswoman in the iron trade, who purchased the estate in the 1730s. Her wines speedily earned a reputation for quality, transcending contemporary views of Pomerol. The vineyard boundaries have remained static since the 1871 acquisition of La Conseillante by the Nicolas family, whose descendants continue to control the estate. Marielle Cazaux manages winemaking today, and Michel Rolland consults. Roughly one-third of the vineyard crosses the Saint-Émilion border, and most of the vines are rooted in blue clay, the rest on sandy gravel.
Style & Vinification Techniques
La Conseillante’s fruit is sorted by hand or by optical sorter, and the grand vin goes through a three- to five-day cold maceration before fermentation in epoxy-lined concrete tanks. After 18 months of élevage in 55% to 80% new French oak barrels, it is fined with egg whites.
