Summary

Located near the Ben Rinnes mountain, where the River Spey and Lour Burn meet, Aberlour was founded in 1879 by local banker James Fleming, who chose the site for its spring water supply and its ancient, mystical connection to water. The distillery was expanded soon after by a new owner, Robert Thorne & Sons, in 1892. After a series of fires, the distillery was redesigned in 1898 by architect Charles Doig. It was the first distillery purchased by S. Campbell & Son, in 1945. That brand was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 1974. Today, Aberlour is the fifth best-selling single malt in the world.

Style & Distillation Techniques

Aberlour’s soft water is sourced from the Ben Rinnes and Birkenbush Springs, and barley is grown 15 miles from the distillery. Most Aberlour spirits are double matured in Oloroso Sherry casks and American Oak barrels, selected by the master blender. Aberlour was one of the first to adapt its distillery tours toward whisky aficionados as opposed to tourist groups. Today, even the introductory tour starts at two hours.
