Summary

Bodega Aleanna is a joint venture between historian Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena and the namesake of Catena Zapata’s Adrianna Vineyard, and Alejandro Virgil, a soil scientist who has served as chief winemaker at Catena Zapata since 2002. Aleanna is a portmanteau of their names. The bottles themselves are labeled as El Enemigo (or El Gran Enemigo for their flagship Cabernet Franc blends), translating to “the enemy,” an allusion to the self as the original enemy and a reference to Catena and Virgil’s shared love of history and philosophy. In addition to the Malbec and Cabernet Franc, Aleanna also bottles Bonarda, Chardonnay, and a Syrah-Viognier blend.

Style & Vinification Techniques

For the top wines, fermentation takes place in barrels, with 30% whole bunches. Cold maceration proceeds for 5 days, and the average length of maceration is 23 days. Fermentation is temperature controlled at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Some wines are aged in 100-year-old foudres that were re-toasted and reassembled in Mendoza.
