Summary
The Almocadén name is Arabic in origin and means „captain of the troops responsible for watching over the fields.“ Don José Gonzalez Granados established this small, family-run house in 1915 when he purchased the first winemaking premises. His family had been cultivating grapes in the region since the early nineteenth century. His son took over in 1985 and his two grandsons currently helm the house.
Almocadén is unique in Jerez in that it owns just less than 100 acres of vineyards in the area. They have an overall reputation a more simple but rustic style in three tiers: Fino and Manzanilla (purchased from Sanlúcar), the Caletero range of Amontillado and Oloroso, and their most prestigious range of their oldest wines, the Almocadén series.
