Summary
The name Auchentoshan comes from a Gaelic phrase that means “corner of the field.” The distillery was founded in 1823 by John Bulloch. In 1994, after having changed ownership six times, Suntory acquired Morrison Bowmore, which owned Auchentoshan at that time. Suntory merged with Beam Inc. in 2014, creating Beam Suntory, the current owner of Auchentoshan. More recently, Auchentoshan has focused its attention on a new visitor center and the development of its duty free range. It is one of few active distilleries remaining in the Lowlands and is situated close to the city of Glasgow. Notably, Auchentoshan triple distills its spirits, unique for a Scottish distillery.
Style & Distillation Techniques
Auchentoshan works with completely unpeated barley and ferments the wash in Oregon pine washbacks, adding more complexity than the modern stainless steel option. Auchentoshan is the only distillery to triple distill 100% of its single malt, resulting in a narrower spirit cut and a more delicate taste. This distillation brings the ABV to 81%, whereas double distillation typically yields about 70% ABV. The extra distillation also further removes impurities, resulting in a lighter, ester character, and allows the wood maturation to have greater influence.
