Summary

The Mazzei family of Castello di Fonterutoli purchased the Belguardo Estate, situated just 10 kilometers from the coast, in the mid-1990s. The family took on a significant replanting project after acquiring the property, focusing both on native varieties such as Sangiovese, Alicante, and Vermentino and on international grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. The estate is situated in a drier and slightly warmer part of the region, with good drainage thanks to stony soils.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Wines produced by Mazzei at Belguardo tend toward concentration and power. The vineyards are densely planted (up to 6,500 vines per hectare) and grapes are hand-picked before macerating for two to three weeks. All of the reds are aged in new French oak for up to 18 months.
