Summary
Kopke is the oldest Port house, founded by German immigrant Christiano Kopke and his son Nicolaus in 1638. The house is widely recognized as the leading Colheita producer, producing the largest percentage of Colheita Port globally. Much of the history before the late 1800s was lost in a tragic 1882 fire, but the firm maintains Colheita and Tawny Port stocks back to the 1930s. Kopke changed hands once in the 20th century before being acquired by Sogevinus in 2006.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Most Kopke vineyards are planted in the vinhos ao alto vertical training system. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled vats. The Colheita Port ages in wood casks until it is mature, and then it is stored in cask in the Kopke cellars. The Port is bottled to order and includes a bottling date on the back of the bottle.
