Summary

At Castello di Fonterutoli, a medieval castle, several historic treaties were signed, including the one between Florence and Siena in which Chianti was ceded to Florence. It has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435. Today, the estate is managed by Lapo Mazzei and two generations of sons and is known for its modern approach and focus on 36 Sangiovese clones. In 2006, a three-story cellar designed by Agnesi Mazzei, owner of the Belguardo estate in Maremma and Zisola in Sicily, was completed.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Everything in Fonterutoli’s cellar is as natural as possible, including gravity flow design, natural springs to moderate temperature and humidity, and the use of agricultural waste as fuel. All work is performed by hand. Lots are fermented for 12 to 18 days, and wines are aged in small French oak barrels.
