Summary
Trotanoy is a derivation of the old Gascon phrase trop ennuie, meaning “too wearisome” or “annoying.” The name references the dense clay soil of Pomerol known as smectite, which hardens post-rain to a consistency that makes the land famously difficult to cultivate—but also causes the vines to focus their energy on ripening fruit. The property was first planted in 1761 by the Giraud family, pioneers of Pomerol’s wine industry. By the middle of the following century, Trotanoy had established itself as one of the leading properties in the area. At that time, the estate was more than four times its present size. It was subsequently subdivided through vineyard sales and inheritances. In the 20th century, was sold to the Pecresse family, then to Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953; his family maintains control of the estate.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Trotanoy offers a wine that is opulent and intensely powerful. The hand-harvested grapes are sorted manually or by optical machine. The wine is fermented in stainless steel or temperature-controlled concrete tanks, before aging in half new French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months. A second wine, Espérance de Trotanoy, is only produced in select vintages.
