Summary

Sonoma Coast viticulture pioneer David Cobb was first a marine biologist and ecologist. While working in Saudi Arabia in the 1970s, without access to beer or wine, he tried his hand at home winemaking. Back in Northern California, he planted Pinot Noir in his backyard and studied the wine business. Finding similarities between Burgundy and the ridgetops of the Sonoma Coast, David and his wife, Diane, purchased the land that became their Coastlands Vineyard in 1988, despite discouragement from industry professionals. After years of selling grapes, David partnered with his son Ross, a winemaker, to establish Cobb Wines with a first vintage in 2001. Since then, the father-son duo has sold fruit, made wine, and consulted for various iconic wineries. Ross’s resume includes winemaking stints at Ferrari-Carano, Bonny Doon, Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Ross picks grapes at lower Brix levels and seeks to producer lower-alcohol wines that express site over style. About 30% new French oak is used.
