Summary

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 by Aimé Sabon, though his first estate-bottling was in 1973. He owns 15 hectares of land spread across many lieux-dits, most of which are devoted to Grenache. There are also some very old Syrah and Mourvèdre plantings, which are used in the Vieilles Vignes bottling. Additionally, the estate owns 40 hectares of vines outside of the AOP, which are used in various bottlings of Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Aimé’s son, Christophe, handles production, and together they are known for a ripe, extracted and concentrated style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Red wines are 80% de-stemmed; whites are not de-stemmed. The reds are aged in a combination of foudres, tanks and small oak barrels (with varying percentages of new oak). The whites do not go through malolactic fermentation and are aged in small oak barrels – a high percentage of which are new.
