Summary
Framingham is the rare Marlborough winery to earn its reputation through a grape other than Sauvignon Blanc. Known instead for Riesling, Framingham’s first vineyard was planted in 1981 by Rex Brooke-Taylor, who named the project after his ancestral home in the United Kingdom. The first Framingham wine, a Riesling, was released in 1994, while the brand was still vinified at other facilities. Framingham built its own winery in 1997 and has been owned since 2007 by Sogrape, which also owns Port shippers Offley, Sandeman, and Ferreira, as well as Bodegas LAN in Rioja. Framingham has earned attention for its experimental F-Series, which replicates the German Prädikatswein scale for the brand’s own Riesling, with a Kabinett, Trockenbeerenauslese, and each level in between. Framingham also produces Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Framingham practices organic viticulture across its estate holdings, although organics are not a requirement for purchased fruit. The winery employs a variety of more experimental vinification practices, particularly in the F-Series, including the use of stainless steel barrels, glass fermentation vessels, and acacia wood. Wines often ferment spontaneously through indigenous yeasts.
