Summary
In 1840, brothers James and John Grant founded the distillery. With the proximity of the port of Garmouth and the River Spey, plus abundant barley growing nearby, it was an ideal location. James Grant, known as The Major, was the nephew of John Grant and ran the company from the 1870s through the early 1900s. Among his innovations were the notably tall stills and the purifiers that are still used in both distillations.
After the company passed through several members of the family, J. & J. Grant merged with George and J. G. Smith to form the Glenlivet & Glen Grant Distillers Ltd. in 1953. There were several other owners in the ensuing years; Campari acquired Glen Grant in 2006. Today, Glen Grant is one of the top 10 single malt distilleries in Scotland, by both percentage of the world market share and volume of spirits produced.
Style & Distillation Techniques
The distinctive, light flavor of Glen Grant starts with its aromatic malted barley. The stills are taller than those of most other distilleries, creating lighter spirits that contribute to the crisp flavor of Glen Grant. The purifiers used in both distillations further contribute to the fresh style. The Bourbon and Sherry casks used for maturation are hand-chosen by the distillery manager, Dennis Malcolm.
