Summary

Robert Hay founded Glenfarclas in 1836. The name means “glen of the green grassland” in Gaelic, and the property is situated at the foot of the Ben Rinnes, the highest mountain in the region. The modern distillery’s history begins in 1865, when John Grant, a cattle breeder, purchased the Recherlich Farm and, as part of the transaction, the distillery. The property was a useful halfway point between his existing farm and the cattle market. Today, Glenfarclas remains a family-run business, led by the fifth and sixth generations of the Grant family – a rarity among distilleries in Scotland. Glenfarclas offers many special releases to celebrate their long family history and craftsmanship.

Style & Distillation Techniques

Glenfarclas’s clean spring water comes down the granite slopes of the Ben Rinnes mountain. The distillery has three pairs of directly fired stills and wash stills equipped with rummagers, or copper chains that rotate along the bottom of the stills to prevent solids from sticking to the copper. Glenfarclas spirits are aged in used Oloroso casks selected by John Grant from a family-run estate in Spain.
