Summary
Glenfiddich is the leading single malt Scotch producer in the world but had modest beginnings. In 1886, William Grant and his nine children set out to pursue Grant’s lifelong dream of making “the best dram in the valley.” They built the distillery by hand over the course of one year and named it Glenfiddich, or “valley of the deer.” The distillery has remained in the family to this day, even as production has soared. In 1963, it was the first to actively market a single malt outside of Scotland; internationally, blended whisky was dominant. Today, Glenfiddich enjoys the title of the world’s best-selling and most awarded single malt Scotch.
Style & Distillation Techniques
Glenfiddich’s water is sourced from the Robbie Dhu Spring, and its fermentation washbacks are handmade from Douglas fir. Two differently shaped spirit stills are utilized to create distinct spirits that will be blended before aging. The maturation barrels are used American oak and Sherry casks that are re-charred before being filled. The distillery is one of the few to still employ a coppersmith and cooper.
