Summary
Founded in 1843 by William Matheson, the distillery began production in 1849. The property is located by the Dornoch Firth (an estuary) and boasts the tallest stills in Scotland, measuring eight meters. Glenmorangie pioneered extra-maturation, wherein spirits are matured in Bourbon casks followed by wine casks to develop additional layers of flavor. The company’s ownership split in 1918 between Macdonald & Muir Ltd. and Durham; Macdonald & Muir acquired 100% of the company in the late 1930s. In 2004, the Macdonald family sold Glenmorangie to Moët Hennessy.
Style & Distillation Techniques
Glenmorangie’s flavor begins with its limestone and sandstone hard water source, the Tarlogie Springs. The distillery’s stills are the tallest in Scotland at eight meters; the copper necks alone are over five meters. The height of the stills’ necks results in only the lightest vapors being pulled out through distillation, keeping the spirits light in body and aroma. Finally, the spirits are aged in a unique variety of casks only ever filled twice, including Port pipes, Sherry butts, and Sauternes casks.
