Summary
In 1977, Grattamacco became the second estate to be established in Bolgheri. The first vintage followed in 1982, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Sangiovese. Siblings Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris, who also own Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino and Castello ColleMassari in Montecucco, work with winemaker Luca Marrone. The estate’s vineyards are comprised of three distinct soil types: red sandy soil, calcareous clay, and a sandy alluvial mix. Grattamacco is certified organic by ICEA.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Viticulture is organic. All reds are fermented in open-top, cone-shaped oak vats. Red grape varieties are fermented separately, then blended after aging, which occurs in a mix of new and used barriques for 12 to 18 months. The white wine is fermented in stainless steel.
