Summary

The estate, a member of the VDP since 1910, is currently in its fifth generation of Gunderloch family ownership – Agnes and Fritz Hasselbach took over the estate’s operations in 1979 – and is steadily transitioning to a sixth. In 1996 the couple doubled the size of their estate with the purchase of the Anton Balbach winery in Nierstein. Gunderloch’s Nackenheimer Rothenberg TBA Riesling has been awarded 100 points by Wine Spectatorthree times, for the 1992, 1996, and 2001 vintages. Gunderloch has long been recognized as one of the top wineries in Rheinhessen’s Roter Hang, the traditional seat of quality in the region.

The production of the winery is 70% dry and 30% sweet; however, their fame is clearly derived from their sweeter styles.

Style & Vinification Techniques

The estate strives for low yields, with the average yield of their GG wines falling between 20-25 hl/ha. The winery has traditionally relied on cultured yeast and stainless steel for fermentation.
