Summary
John Duval is recognized as one of Australia’s most highly-regarded winemakers. He worked under previous Penfold’s winemakers Max Schubert and Don Ditter before holding the head winemaker position himself from 1986-2002. In 2003, he started John Duval Wines using his forty years of winemaking experience and working with fruit from the region’s oldest vineyards. John is also a vintner partner in Washington State’s Long Shadows project.
Style & Vinification Techniques
The wines ferment in both older, open-top fermenters and small stainless steel tanks. Oak maturation varies by vintage, averaging 30-45% new French oak with the remaining wine aging in 2-4 year old American and French oak hogsheads.
