Summary
Jura was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. But after changing ownership a few times, it was dismantled in 1901 due to the economic constraints of the remote location. The distillery was rebuilt in the 1960s, with the first distillation in 1963. The Isle of Jura is situated 60 miles off the west coast of Scotland. Thirty miles long and seven miles wide, it has a population around 200 and a unique microclimate. This is the only distillery on the island. Jura was under the Whyte & Mackay umbrella from 1993 until 2014, when it was acquired by Emperador Inc.
Style & Distillation Techniques
The distillery is unique in its isolated location on the Isle of Jura, a small, wild island. The water source starts high in the mountains, the Paps of Jura, and is naturally filtered as it runs down. The stills are taller than those of most island distilleries, resulting in lighter spirits. Jura first began releasing peated expressions after 1990.
