Summary

La Cigarrera is named after the women who used to sell cigarettes on the streets for Cadiz and Sevilla’s large cigarette factories. The bodega is small and still family-owned, located in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and founded in 1758 by Don Joseph Colóm Darbó. Manuel Hidalgo Colóm purchased the current bodega in 1891, and launched their flagship Manzanilla La Cigarrera. His great-grandsons, the Hidalgo Garcia de Velasco brothers (ninth generation from Don Joseph Colóm Darbó) now run the firm. Under the Consejo Regulador’s former minimum stock regulations, the company was required to operate as an almacenista but the brothers began bottling their own wines in 1997.

Style & Vinification Techniques

The Bodega is known for their classic and lean style, sometimes associated with a smoky character to the manzanilla wines. Their signature La Cigarrera Manzanilla ages for an average of 4-5 years. They added the Manzanilla Pasada to their portfolio with the 2011 vintage, taken from four butts. Their Amontillado Viejo VOS is also new to their line-up, taken from a single cask that once belonged to the brothers’ great-great-grandmother.
