Summary
Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 by husband-and-wife team Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli. Natives of Bolgheri eager to explore the region’s potential, they planted many different grape varieties on a small plot of land to see what would work. They began by making blends, with a first vintage in 1987, but they transitioned to mono-varietal wines starting in 1994. Tragically, Eugenio Campolmi died of cancer in 2002, just as the estate was receiving increased recognition and had finished a conversion to organic viticulture. Renowned Tuscan enologist Luca d’Attoma has been working with Le Macchiole since 1991, and Cinzia’s brother, Massimo Merli, now manages viticulture.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Le Macchiole’s three varietal wines are made by separately vinifying each vineyard plot, then aging the wines in 75% new French oak for 14 to 18 months. The Bolgheri Rosso is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah, aged in a mix of second-use and third-use barriques, as well as concrete.
