Summary
In 2002, Gault Millau bestowed the title of German „Winemaker of the Year“ upon the estate, which has pioneered quality wine production in the southern Pfalz and is now regularly one of the top producers of dry Riesling in all of Germany. The family name–Rebholz–translates to „vine wood,“ and the government bestowed the title of honorary title of „Ökonomierat“ (agricultural counselor) upon Eduard Rebholz (1889-1966), grandfather of Hansjörg Rebholz, the estate’s current manager. Rebholz has long championed naturwein in Germany, and produces wines without chaptalization or the addition of süssreserve. The estate is certified organic, and vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Style & Vinification Techniques
Nearly all of Rebholz’s production is trocken – Riesling, for instance, often has 4 or 5 g/l of residual sugar. Fermentation for Riesling occurs in stainless steel with cultured yeasts. There is some pre-fermentation skin contact for both Riesling and Weissburgunder. Some wines, such as Spätburgunder and Chardonnay, may be labeled with an „R“ to indicate aging in small barriques. There is no chaptalization or enrichment of any kind.
