Summary

Piero Palmucci founded Poggio di Sotto in 1989 and worked closely with the University of Milan to analyze his soils before opting to both preserve older vines already on the property as well as plant anew various clones and rootstocks best suited for his soil. Today the estate is certified organic and covers 33 hectares; in areas of the vineyard not suitable for planting Sangiovese, Piero chose to leave the land either uncultivated or planted to olive trees (in lieu of planting international grapes). Piero had no descendants and sold the property to Claudio Tipa (who also owns ColleMassari and Grattamacco) in 2011.

Style & Vinification Techniques

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in 70-hl temperature-controlled vats lasting 30-35 days with frequent pumping over. Wines are aged in Slavonian botti and bottle according to local aging requirements. Wines are bottled unfiltered.
