Summary
Fattoria San Giusto a Rentennano, along the banks of the Arabia River in the southern reaches of Chianti Classico, began as a medieval monastery known as San Giusto alle Monache. In the ninth century, it was named the border between Florence and Siena, and the Florentine transformed it into a fortress. Later, the Ricasoli family owned the estate for several centuries before the Martini di Cigala family gained ownership through marriage. It is owned by several members of the family today. Siblings Anna Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesco, Alessandro, and Luca are partners, with the support of two consultants, oenologist Attilio Pagli and agronomist Ruggero Mazzilli.
Style & Vinification Techniques
In 2001, the estate started on the path to organics, and since 2006, the entire estate and winery have been certified organic. Since 2007, 80% of the electricity has been self-generated with solar panels. All sewage and gray water are purified for irrigation use. Canes and shoots are tied to trellises using willow branches and recycled paper. All fermentations are performed with native yeasts in stainless steel, then transferred to oak for aging.
