Summary
George Sandeman founded the house in 1790 and later expanded to both Sherry and Madeira. Sandeman has long been one of the largest shipping companies in Vila Nova de Gaia. As of 2017, it is number one in sales and exports of Port to the US. It was family owned until 1979, when it was purchased by Seagram’s, followed by Sogrape Vinhos in 2001. George Sandeman, the seventh generation of the family, leads the company today.
Style & Vinification Techniques
The fruit may be entirely or partially destemmed, then treaded by foot or machine in either traditional lagares or stainless steel temperature-controlled tanks, all dependent on the bottling at hand. Sandeman is routinely recognized for its Tawny Port.
