Summary

capa is the second most northerly distillery in Scotland, located slightly south of Highland Park. Situated on the shore of the Scapa Flow harbor, it is a small island operation with a single pair of stills. Scapa was established in 1885 by Macfarlane & Townsend, then passed through various owners in the following decades. There was a break in production between 1934 and 1936, and it was mothballed in 1994 and nearly closed completely in the early 2000s. Instead of closing, however, it was refurbished. Chivas Brothers became the owner and then was acquired in 2001 by Pernod Ricard. In 2015, the distillery welcomed visitors for the first time.

Style & Distillation Techniques

Scapa is unlike other island distilleries in that all its barley is unpeated. The distillery uses a single pair of stills and has one of the only barrel-shaped Lomond wash stills left of its kind. The unique shape contributes to the rich and fruity new make spirit. The spirits are aged in first-fill American oak casks.
