Summary
Urium is a newcomer in Jerez, first produced in 2009. Bodegas Mons Urium officially registered with the Consejo Regulador in September 2009. Mons Urium (“golden hill”) is the Roman name for Moguer, the hometown of the Ruiz family in the province of Huelva. Owner and founder Alonso Ruiz Olivares is a longtime Sherry enthusiast and always wanted to make wine. He purchased a small and mostly forgotten bodega in Jerez’s Barrio de Santiago from former almacenista Josefa Pérez Rosado. Today he manages the house with his daughter Rocío Ruiz, Urium’s oenologist. Their wines are considered more full-bodied and bold in style, though they released a younger and more approachable line in 2011.
Style & Vinification Techniques
Despite their young establishment, their stocks are older from their starting 500-cask purchase, which allowed for commercialization of an entire VORS series. Their wines are bottled directly from cask without filtration, and sometimes have small sediment deposits. Their most prestigious wine, the Gran Señor de Urium is a distinctive Palo Cortado coming from one single cask. Urium had the wine tested and it has been carbon-dated to be more than 100 years old. Only 15 bottles were made available in 2010, priced over $20,000 per bottle.
