Summary
Yering Station is well known for it’s long viticultural history – the property boasts Victoria’s first planted vineyard dating from 1838. Despite this, ownership changed multiple times through the early and mid-1900’s. Its modern history came into being when the winery was purchased by the Rathbone family in 1996. At the time, the family planted an additional 100 acres in partnership with the Champagne house Devaux, and this acreage provides fruit for their Yarrabank sparkling wines. Along with vineyard expansion, the family added a large and more modern winery. The vineyards are dry farmed, with manual irrigation applied sparingly when needed to balance vine health. The Yering Station extensive portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo.
Style & Vinification Techniques
White wines are fermented by cultivated yeasts in stainless steel tanks before aging in barrel. Each white variety spends from 1-8 months in French oak barrels, depending on the variety. Reds are fermented in a combination of open top fermenters and roto-fermenters by cultivated yeasts. Various percentages of Pinot Noir and Shiraz are whole cluster fermented, and the Shiraz is co-fermented with Viognier. All wines are fined and filtered prior to bottling.
